MIGRAINE AND VITAMIN B
Migraine is one of the most mind eating illnesses with a prevalence of affecting more than 1 billion people worldwide.
But the treatments involved with medicines of the narrow therapeutic index with greater side effects such as non-selective beta-blockers (propranolol),caffeine-like xanthine derivatives, ergot alkaloids, and more latest medicine sumatriptan. All these medicines have to be taken continuously with high risk.
Hence researchers unveil a newer fact such as the involvement of endogenous amino acid present in blood plasma known as Homocysteine which causes the incidence of Migraine by causing blood clots. The higher the homocysteine in the blood the more the occurring of Migraine. By this fact, the research is going on with folic acid one of the vitamin-B group (Vit.B-9) which they found decreasing the homocysteine plasma level by increasing its metabolism and thereby relieving migraine.
The researches also found that the normal 1mg dose of folic acid is having no effect on homocysteine metabolism.
Fortunately, a minimum higher dose such as 2mg of folic acid has an expected good effect in reducing migraine
Further research shows that a combination of Folic acid Vit B-9) 2mg+Pyridoxine (Vit B-6) 25mg+Cyanocobalamin(Vit B-12) have the expected good effect in relieving migraine with minimal side effects.
Unfortunately, the research cannot be concluded as a 2 mg folic acid cannot be a daily dose as the maximum recommended daily dose is 1mg. A higher dosage may cause shortness of breath, chest tightness, troubled breathing, wheezing, and skin rashes.
Hence up to now still the researchers are trying to come out with a good combination formula which contains the amount of folic acid not exceeding 1 mg.
