ZIKA CAUSES NEURO EFFECTS
Although Zika viral infections are at the beginning asymptomatic they cause many neurological complications and brain effects if left untreated.
Zika virus is nowadays seriously spreading infections worldwide.
Regarding the increasing number of neurological complications such as Guillain Barre Syndrome, with the characteristics of brain malfunctions, meningoencephalitis, or acute myelitis.
The GBS syndrome affects the peripheral sensory nerves due to some malfunctions in the body's own autoimmune system which mistakenly attacks the body's peripheral sensory nerves. The condition develops within hours to a week. It is life-threatening. When the sensory nerves of the respiratory system are affected the condition becomes fatal.
Recently an additional neurological complication due to Zika infection has been revealed by a group of researches from Honduras, Venezuela, and the US. They found that there are complications involved by sensory nerves. The first case of Sensory Polyneuropathy due to Zika infection has been described by these researchers.
They published their papers in the Journal of Neurological Science on line.
The JNS is part of the combined efforts of the World Federation of Neurology (GFN) workgroup on Zika.
This federation has established a forum regarding the increased number of neuro complications to contribute the expertise to the coordinated world response to the Zika virus.
