ANTINEOPLASTIC DRUGS-INTRODUCTION
SEE THE CELL CYCLE AND DIVISION
The word neoplasm refers to a collection of abnormally proliferating cells. They are two types such as Benign, a non-invading non-pathological type, Malignant, an invading pathological type.
Malignant neoplastic disease comprised of carcinogenic cancerous cells can invade the surrounding cells and spread over all parts of the body.
Stages of the Cell Cycle
1.G-1:-Synthesis of components needed for DNA synthesis.
2.S:- DNA synthesis
3.G-2:- Growth and replication of cytoplasmic constituents.
4.M:-Mitosis (Cell division)
5.G-0:- Resting phase
"Cell cycle-specific"(CCS)are the drugs that will primarily affect the cells that are actively replicating through the stages G-1 to M.
These drugs are,
1.Antimetabolites
2.Plant alkaloids
3.Bleomycin
4.Steroid hormones
"Cell cycle nonspecific (CCNS) drugs that will kill both active and resting cells(G-0).They are more toxic but are more effective against slow-growing tumors.
These drugs are,
1.Alkylating agents
2.Antibiotics
