IMMUNE PHARMACOLOGY-PART-X-HORMONES

ANTICANCER DRUGS-HORMONES AND ANTAGONISTS

In this section, we dealt with drugs agonizing or antagonizing some hormonal actions within the body.

1.Anti-Androgens:-

1.Flutamide:-

It is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen that inhibits the translocation of the androgen receptor inside the nucleus.

Therapeutical Use:-

Flutamide is used in combination with Gonadotrophin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) such leuprolide for treating Prostate Cancer

Side effects:-

1.Diarrhea
2.Hot flashes
3.Impotence
4.Gynecomastia
5.Reversible hepatotoxicity.

2.Tamoxifen:-

A nonsteroidal anti-estrogen drug that competitively inhibits estrogen at its receptor.

Therapeutical Use:-

Drug of choice for breast cancer with estrogen receptor-positive.
It can be given orally.

Therapeutical:-

1.Hot flashes
2.Nausea and Vomiting
3.Menstrual Irregularities
4.Thrombo embolism on prolonged use
5.Endometrial cancer.

Leuprolide:-

Leuprolide is a GnRH synthetic analog that when administered in a continuous fashion will inhibit the release of FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary.

Clinical Use:-

1.Prostate cancer.
2.Endometrial cancer.

Side effects:-

1.Hot flashes
2.Impotence

GLUCOCORTICOIDS

1.Prednisone;2.Hydrocortisone:-

They are used to treat Hodkin's disease; Non-Hodkin's lymphoma; Myeloma.

Side effects:

1.Immunity suppression
2.Hyperglycemia
3.Osteoporosis
4.Gastric and duodenal ulcers
