DRUGS OF ABUSE-PART-III-LSD

LYSERGIC ACID DIETHYLAMIDE(LSD)


LSD is one of the major drugs of abuse widely used in society for getting hallucinations.LSD was discovered in 1938 and it is a potent chemical to produce mood swings and dissociative effects.
It is discovered from ergot a fungus grown in ryes and other grains.
LSD is commonly known as 'acid' in the dark world and available as tablets, powders, and liquids. It can be taken by oral administration. It is a colorless powder with a slightly bitter taste.

Mechanism


It is a powerful activator of serotonin receptors in the midbrain.

Physiological Effects-1.CNS

1.Hallucinations and flashback visual effects
2.Arousal
3.Excitation
4.Disturbed perception
5.Disturbed mood
6.Panic

Physiological Effects-Periphery

1.Mydriasis(Dilatation of the pupil)
2.Tachycardia
3.Flushing, Lacrimation, and salivation
4.Hypertension

Antidote

Haloperidol, a narcoleptic butyrophenone compound masking the LSD by blocking serotonin receptors.
